James McClean will retire from international football after the Republic's friendly against New Zealand
The emergency call to James McClean to give him full involvement in his final international window might just give younger members of Stephen Kenny’s squad a last chance to be in the company of a player who has been there and done that in terms of qualifying for a major tournament.
McClean is the only member of the travelling party for Amsterdam with experience of contributing to a campaign that ended in success for the Republic of Ireland. His pal and fellow Derry man Shane Duffy made his big breakthrough during the Euros in France; he didn’t feature on the road there.
