Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed what he was told by former sporting director Michael Edwards.
The Reds are searching for a new sporting director after Jorg Schmadtke left the club at the end of the January transfer window. Schmadtke had been appointed by Liverpool on a short-term basis after Julian Ward announced his intention to step down from the role at the end of last season.
The importance of sporting directors has become a hot topic, with Liverpool and rivals Manchester United both looking to appoint people in the role. Michael Edwards received plenty of plaudits for his part in helping to build the team that became successful under Jurgen Klopp. However, Carragher has admitted that he was surprised to learn the most important aspect of Edwards’ job.

“People always talk about Liverpool’s recruitment, and you think of Michael Edwards with everything that he did working with Jürgen Klopp and others at the club,” Carragher said on the Stick to Football podcast, sponsored by Sky Bet.
“I went to see Michael once because I wanted to get a bit more information from him. I was expecting big insights about how many scouts Liverpool have, how they watch them, how they see different things, but he told me the biggest thing was getting the players they wanted because of the relationships with agents – it’s all about having good relationships with the agents.”
Edwards left Liverpool at the end of the 2021/22 season and recently declined an opportunity to rejoin the Reds in a more senior role to help oversee the club’s major reshuffle. West Ham
