Jonny Evans has signed a one-year contract at Manchester United
Former Northern Ireland internationals and Manchester United youngsters Pat McGibbon and Luke McCullough believe Jonny Evans’ return to Old Trafford will breathe fresh life into his career.
The experienced defender is back with the Premier League giants eight years after leaving the club.
He won three Premier League titles and the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson during his first stint at the club before joining West Brom in 2015.
The 35-year-old signed a one-year deal to provide defensive cover for manager Erik ten Hag.
Evans was a free agent after leaving Leicester City and had been training and playing with United in pre-season.
The Northern Ireland defender has returned to United after his international commitments in the Euro 2024 qualifying double header against Slovenia and Kazakhstan.
McGibbon, who has seven Northern Ireland caps, made one senior appearance for United during his five year spell at the club in the 1990s.
Glentoran defender McCullough has earned six Northern Ireland caps and was at United from 2010 to 2013.
Both men believe Evans can recapture some of the magic he displayed in his first spell with United.
“I was with Jonny at United and Northern Ireland — many people have said it but he never should have been let go from United,” said McCullough.
“I would be in touch with him sometimes, I was very friendly with him and Corry.
“He’s certainly not slowing down and United look like they need him.
“He’s a player who puts everyone at ease and he must be the best Northern Ireland defender that I can remember.
“Jonny can still do a job for United and help out the younger players.
“I think his family are based there so it suits him.
