Jonny Evans has returned to Manchester United on a one-year contract
Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans sealed a spectacular Manchester United return over the summer and has now been confirmed as a member of the Red Devils’ Premier League squad.
The experienced defender, 35, is back with the Premier League giants eight years after leaving the club after signing a one-year deal to provide defensive cover for manager Erik ten Hag.
And while he has already made an appearance for United this season, coming on as a substitute in their 3-1 loss at Arsenal, Evans has now been assured he can continue to be selected for Premier League games moving forward after being named in their 25-man squad.
It is a significant move for the former Leicester City man, who left the Foxes at the end of last season and had been training with Ten Hag’s squad over the summer to try and regain fitness.
He won three Premier League titles and the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson during his first stint at the club before joining West Brom in 2015.
Evans is joined by five of United’s other pre-season acquisitions in the squad, with Altay Bayindir, Mason Mount and Andre Onana also included, as are loan signings Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon.
Although he was also a summer regulation, Danish striker Rasmus Højlund does not count towards United’s squad limit as he is only 20-years-old, with the 25-player limit only counting for players aged 21 or over.
This means the likes of first-team regular Alejandro Garnacho and midfielders Amad and Kobbie Mainoo also do not have to be registered onto the 25-man panel in order to be named in Premier League match day squads.
Evans will have stern competition to compete with for minutes in the United
