Katarina Johnson-Thompson wins gold in 2023 World Championships

Katarina Johnson-Thompson won gold for the first time since 2019 after amassing 6740 points in the 2023 heptathlon World Championships.

Despite finishing second in Sunday's 800m finale, Johnson-Thompson's strong race ensured she reclaimed her 2019 status of World Champion and finished 20 points ahead of American Anna Hall in Budapest

The 30-year-old, from Wavertree, had overtaken Hall after an excellent earlier effort in the long jump before boasting a personal best of 46.14m in the javelin, which extended her overall lead to 26 points after six events and heading into Sunday night's finale.

In order to overtake Johnson-Thompson, Hall needed to boast a substantial lead over the Liverpudlian. However, a personal best time of 2 minutes and 5.63 seconds saw Johnson-Thompson keep her slender lead intact.

After the race, Johnson-Thompson and American Hal embraced fell to their backs and later embraced one another at the finish line, before the former's first World Championship success in four years was later confirmed.

Speaking after the race, BBC Sport's Jessica Ennis, who won gold in the same event at the London Olympics in 2012, said: "It was incredible wasn't it? No one wrote her off, but we didn't expect her to come here and come away best in the world again."
