Chelsea welcomed 14 new players to Stamford Bridge this summer, yet Todd Boehly has been slammed for downgrading Mauricio Pochettino's options between the sticks
Asmir Begovic believes that Chelsea have downgraded in one particular position despite spending nearly half a billion pounds in the summer transfer window. Todd Boehly armed Mauricio Pochettino with 11 new players – not to mention Christopher Nkunku, Malo Gusto and Andrey Santos who the Blues had already signed in January.
Of course, not everybody stayed, with several youngsters going out on loan, but the Blues boss was certainly given the tools to improve his squad. Unfortunately for Boehly, Chelsea are yet to reap the fruits of their labour in the transfer window, sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
While Pochettino has been quick to communicate that the club's project will need time, Begovic has questioned why the west Londoners didn't look to significantly bolster their options between the sticks. Following the departures of Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga, Chelsea signed Robert Sanchez from Brighton and Djordje Petrovic from New England Revolution for a combined £39million.
Speaking on The Byline podcast, the former Blues goalkeeper said: "I’m not against anyone but I look at the goalkeeper position, [Edouard] Mendy and Kepa [Arrizabalaga] leave the football club, say what you want about them but they’ve been replaced by Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez.
"I don’t want to reminisce, but do you remember the days when it was Petr Cech and then Thibaut Courtois? And then it was £70m on Kepa, rightly or wrongly. But it’s not projects. If you’re buying the best players you have to buy.
