Larne players celebrate a remarkable fourth County Antrim Shield success in a row
Larne manager Tiernan Lynch saluted his side’s big game mentality after they stormed to a fourth consecutive County Antrim Shield success.
Glentoran struck early in the second half at Seaview to make it 1-1 but Tomas Cosgrove’s 56th minute header sealed a 2-1 victory.
Luke McCullough rattled the crossbar in a dramatic finish but Warren Feeney’s side couldn’t force a penalty shootout.
Lynch joins legendary boss Roy Coyle as the only Irish League managers to win the Shield four years in a row.
“I’m delighted,” he said. “This is what it is all about. The players and fans do the hard work, they deserve all the credit.
“Praise must go to both teams but we were brave and played some superb football.
“If I could have a quarter of the success Roy (Coyle) has had I will have a good career.
“We don’t take success lightly. This is about the club, fans and Kenny (Bruce). We want to be competitive and reach the later stages of competitions.
“Unfortunately, my kids couldn’t be here as they are not well but they will be watching.”
Larne majority owner Kenny Bruce hailed the achievement, saying “Tiernan, Seamus and the players are building a remarkable dynasty here.”
Both sides came close to opening the scoring when Patrick McClean made a goal-line clearance from Leroy Millar’s header and David Fisher poked a shot just wide.
The Invermen did get the breakthrough on 38 minutes when captain Cian Bolger poked the ball home after goalkeeper Aaron McCarey blocked Lee Bonis’ effort.
