Foot Mercato have revealed that RC Lens have dramatically pulled out of a deal to sign Middlesbrough forward Chuba Akpom (27), despite an agreement already being in place between all relevant parties.
A deal had been agreed between Lens, Middlesbrough, and the player. According to L’Équipe, the deal was worth around €11m, with a further €2m in add-ons. Akpom was set to undergo his medical with Lens on Monday in light of the agreement, but at the last minute, the Ligue 1 side have pulled out of the deal.
According to Foot Mercato, the player’s representatives were concurrently in negotiations with Ajax, which didn’t sit well with Le Sang et Or. Unwilling to be dragged into a bidding war, Lens have therefore exited discussions, and it is now likely that they will explore alternatives.
Akpom was entering his final year of contract with Middlesbrough. The English forward came to prominence last season with a remarkable 28-goal tally with Boro, but it was not enough for Michael Carrick’s side to earn a spot in the Premier League.
