The Athletic are reporting that Brentford have held “preliminary talks” over the signing of Olympique de Marseille midfielder Azzedine Ounahi (23).
Foot Mercato reported earlier this week that English and Spanish sides were interested in the Moroccan international. One of those sides is seemingly Brentford, who are currently short of options in the midfield. Ounahi has also attracted interest from Saudi Arabia, but it has been reported that he wouldn’t be open to a move to the Gulf State.
Ounahi has endured a difficult time at the Vélodrome since his €7m move from SCO Angers last January. After a break-out World Cup with Morocco, Ounahi got his move but was then hindered by injuries, limiting his playing time.
Under new boss Marcelino, the former Angers midfielder has been played on the left of the midfield, an unfamiliar position to Ounahi. However, since Les Phocéens’ Champions League exit at the hands of Panathinaikos, Ounahi has played just one minute. A departure therefore cannot be ruled out, according to Foot Mercato, although club president Pablo Longoria has reportedly provided assurances to the player. The Athletic are reporting that Marseille aren’t interested in a loan deal so any move would have to be permanent.
