Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique entered the debate surrounding the entertainment factor of Ligue 1 during his pre-match press conference for the visit of AS Monaco to the Parc des Princes on Friday evening (kick-off 21:00 local time). The Spaniard defended the league and revealed he was ‘surprised’ by the level of other teams, at a press conference transcribed by Get French Football News.
“Ligue 1? A boring championship? Not for me at all. I have seen a lot of open matches in games where I would have liked to seen us have more control. Ligue 1 has a higher level than I expected. It is a league that has a lot of good players who go on to play at the even higher level such as the Premier League.”
The debate surrounding France’s top tier’s entertainment factor came in the wake of comments made by France U21 coach Thierry Henry on the quality of Ligue 1, stating that “It isn’t even necessarily the lack of goals [that are making Ligue 1 boring currently]. There is no action, no shots on target.”
The comments prompted a response from Montpellier manager Michel Der Zakarian, hitting back at the former AS Monaco manager by stating “I don’t agree with Thierry Henry. Where has he managed? What did he do at AS Monaco? He had three months and then he cleared off.”
In the round of Ligue 1 fixtures which preceded the international break, only 12 goals were scored in eight games, and the week before that only 13.
