The Reds were far from their best at Anfield, although goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota were enough to see Jurgen Klopp's side overcome the stubborn Belgian outfit.
It was an ideal response after Saturday's VAR controversy at Tottenham Hotspur. Next up for the Reds is a tricky trip to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Sunday.

Sought to switch the play whenever possible with crossfield passes and defended intently. Ambitious shot prompted the opener. Subbed.

Kept things simple with Union rarely troubling the Liverpool backline first half. Good battle with the powerful Nilsson, and busier as visitors pressed in final quarter.
Jarell Quansah 7
A couple of wayward passes in an otherwise solid showing before break, and had to stand strong second half as Union began to probe.
Kostas Tsimikas 6
Regularly offered himself on the overlap and delivery from set-pieces caused Union issues first half. More subdued after break.

Imposed himself early on with some snappy challenges and neat passing at close quarters. Subbed.
