Man United dealt fresh injury blow as Tottenham and Aston Villa handed Champions League boost

Manchester United star Luke Shaw is expected to be out of action for «a few months» after picking up a fresh muscle injury. Shaw had to leave the field before half-time during Sunday's game against Luton Town which saw the Red Devils clinch a 2-1 victory.

Just a week earlier, during United's match against Aston Villa, Shaw was also taken off at half-time, something which manager Erik ten Hag dubbed as a safety precaution. On Wednesday, a statement from Man United said: "Luke Shaw has sustained a muscle injury and will be out for an extended period.

“Further assessment is still required to determine the severity but we expect him to be absent for a few months.” Shaw has been plagued by injuries this season, with the defender making just 15 appearances in all competitions.

The defender's latest injury setback is a major blow to Man United, who are fighting to secure Champions League qualification for next season. Ten Hag's side are currently sixth in the Premier League with 44 points.

Tottenham and Aston Villa appear to be the other two clubs fighting for that fourth spot, with Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal embroiled in a title race. Spurs are currently in fifth place with 47 points while Villa are two points ahead of Ange Postecoglou's side in fourth.

The news of Shaw's latest injury is also likely to cause concern for England manager Gareth Southgate ahead of the Euros this summer in Germany. It remains to be seen if Shaw will play for his club again this season before the Euros start in mid June.
