Jonny Evans says he doesn't want the season to end as he is enjoying playing for Manchester United so much
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has thanked ‘Northern Irish Reds’ for supporting him through thick and thin.
Evans, who turned 36 on Wednesday, made his Manchester United debut in 2007 and went on to play 198 games for his boyhood club before leaving for West Bromwich Albion in 2015.
The Northern Ireland centurion made a shock return to Old Trafford last summer, and has proved to be one of United’s most consistent performers in what has been a challenging season for the Red Devils.
While Evans has been praised in recent months, he has had to deal with his fair share of criticism down the years. However, he has enjoyed unwavering support from United’s large Northern Irish fanbase.
He said: “Growing up in Northern Ireland, I was fanatical about United — so many people over there feel the same way.
“Whenever I’m on my way into Old Trafford there’s always thousands of fans queueing up to see the players. The amount of Northern Irish accents you hear amongst that crowd is incredible.
“I even get stopped by young fans who play for the same youth team (Greenisland) that I played for as a boy.
“It’s great to be have that connection with United fans from Northern Ireland, because down the years they’ve always been my biggest supporters.
“I have to say a big thank you to all the Northern Irish Reds for their support.”
With United lingering eighth in the Premier League table and crashing out of the Champions League at the group stage, it’s been far from a stellar season for Erik ten Hag’s men.
However, Evans is enjoying himself — he has played 15 times this season.
