Manchester United lost further ground in the top four race on Sunday afternoon, losing 3-1 to Manchester City in the derby at the Etihad Stadium.
Despite leading at half-time, following a stunning hit from Marcus Rashford, United were undone after the break through goals from Phil Foden (2) and Erling Haaland. City dominated proceedings for long spells and barely gave United a kick of the ball in the second half.
Coupled with Aston Villa's 3-2 win over Luton Town on Saturday, United are now 11 points shy of the Champions League places, meaning they face an uphill struggle if they are to finish inside the top four. They are also now six points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
It means United, having lost back-to-back league games, must get back on track when they face Everton at Old Trafford this coming Saturday. Villa face Spurs the following day, meaning United need to pounce on the fact at least one of them will drop points.
Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround Erik ten Hag's future as United boss. The Manchester Evening News reported last week that United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos Group have analysed potential replacements.
