The uncertainty surrounding Marcelino’s position as manager of Olympique de Marseille now looks to have been resolved. The Spaniard will leave the club, according to reports from RMC Sport and La Provence.
It was announced by L’Équipe on Monday that the Spaniard would leave Les Phocéens after just seven games. There was audible discontent in the stands of the Vélodrome on Sunday as they drew 0-0 against Toulouse. Whilst there has been criticism from the fans regarding the playing style, Marseille nonetheless sit third in the Ligue 1 table, just two points behind league leaders AS Monaco.
However, Marcelino was shocked by comments made by fans during a meeting between Marseille’s hierarchy and supporters of the club on Monday. He considered departing the club on Tuesday and reportedly placed the thought in the heads of his players during Monday’s training session.
Marcelino’s decision was confirmed on Wednesday morning. He arrived with his staff at 9am and announced to his players that he would be leaving the club, having only arrived at the end of June. He was therefore not on the Marseille flight that left for Amsterdam for Thursday’s Europa League match against Ajax, which took off at 11am. According to La Provence, Jacques Abardonado, a former Marseille player, could take charge in the interim.
