According to L’Équipe, Olympique de Marseille owner Frank McCourt is tentatively exploring the possibility of replacing president Pablo Longoria.
Longoria’s future at the club is in the balance following an explosive meeting with Marseille’s supporters groups on Monday. Threats were reportedly levelled at Longoria, the executives, and manager Marcelino. The latter has since left Les Phocéens as a direct result of the aforementioned meeting.
Whilst Longoria is yet to leave the club, he has temporarily taken a step back in order to consider his future. In an emotional interview with La Provence on Wednesday, the Spaniard detailed the long-running threats to which he has been subjected over a long period of time. Despite being one of those responsible for finding Marcelino’s successor, his mind is currently away from the managerial search, according to La Provence, but according to L’Équipe, Longoria evoked the managerial search yesterday.
L’Équipe add that Javier Ribalta and Pedro Iriondo are both likely to depart OM. McCourt inserted a clause into Longoria’s contract, which protects the club from the potential sudden and unforeseen departure of the Spaniard. Tentative steps towards finding Longoria’s successor are being taken. Following his departure former OM employee Julien Fournier is still on the market, and he was even in contact with McCourt earlier this summer regarding a Saudi buyer. The talks didn’t go far with McCourt looking for a considerable sum.
