According to a report in L’Équipe, Olympique de Marseille are stepping up their attempts to offload France international midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi (24).
Guendouzi endured a difficult end to the last Ligue 1 campaign. Having been a staple in the Marseille midfield, and having been a regular in Didier Deschamps’ France squad, the former Gunner saw himself demoted to the bench by Igor Tudor. The reason for Guendouzi’s demotion in the Croatian manager’s hierarchy was unclear, but Tudor’s departure was thought to offer the Frenchman a second chance with Les Phocéens.
The former FC Lorient midfielder was reportedly keen on remaining at the Vélodrome this summer, but L’Équipe have now revealed that Marseille have commissioned agents to find him a new club. He is considered a saleable asset by Pablo Longoria, and due to the fact that Marseille have five midfielders for just two starting positions, Guendouzi is seen as expendable.
Guendouzi is still appreciated in England. West Ham United and Aston Villa are long-term admirers and Marseille are therefore still confident of a sale in August.
