There was a long-awaited chance to see Levi Colwill play for Chelsea yesterday when the defender started against Brighton in Philadelphia.
The 20-year-old centre-back started in defence alongside Thiago Silva, who is almost double his age, against the Seagulls. Colwill in particular looked really accomplished in the centre of defence – fuelling the hype when it comes to the young Chelsea defender.
In the full-back positions were Malo Gusto and Ben Chilwell at right and left-back, respectively. Reece James recently arrived in America after travelling on his own as a precaution. James, though, is now training with his Chelsea teammates and could play some action against Newcastle United on Thursday morning.
But the back-four Mauricio Pochettino fielded from the start against Brighton in Philadelphia could be similar to what we see when Chelsea take on Liverpool next month in their opening game of the 2023/24 Premier League season. With that said, football.london takes a look at what Chelsea's back-line could look like at Stamford Bridge against the Reds.
With the inclusion of James instead of Gusto, we may have seen something like what Pochettino wants to field against Liverpool. Gusto has been very impressive in the two matches he has played thus far, particularly against Brighton where he did well against the immensely talented Kaoru Mitoma.
However, unfortunately for Gusto, he is up against James – one of the best right-backs in world football. If Chelsea can keep James fit in the upcoming campaign, then Pochettino's side will be massively boosted in the back-four.
