Melwood undergoes major makeover as Liverpool arrivals unveiled

Liverpool have welcomed two new arrivals this week - with Melwood having been given a long-awaited makeover.

Replicas of the Reds' Women’s Super League (WSL) and Women’s Championship cups are now proudly on display in the trophy cabinet at the West Derby training base, which was repurchased by the club last summer. Matt Beard's side previously trained at Tranmere Rovers' Solar Campus but are now reaping the rewards of their move to the AXA Melwood Training Centre.

Liverpool are currently fifth in the WSL and through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. And having a reminder of the club's previous successes close at hand will surely only serve to inspire the Reds to greater heights in the season's ahead.

Both trophies on display were won under current boss Matt Beard and captained by current squad players Gemma Bonner and Niamh Fahey. LFC Women’s record appearance holder Bonner captained the back-to-back 2013 and 2014 WSL winning teams and current LFC Women’s captain Fahey captained the 2021/22 Championship winning team.

Bonner said: “It’s extremely special to have them here and it makes you feel proud to see what we have achieved for this club. It also shows the squad and younger players what we’re aiming for.”

Fahey added: “Like AXA Melwood these trophies are part of our history, and this is our home, its only right we have them here on display. It helps to show off our success as a club and show us all what we’re striving for more in the future.”
