I am sick to death of the mistakes in Arsenal fixtures. I am tired of always having to jump onto The Arsenal Way or other YouTube channels and radio stations to discuss what a travesty the club faced in the wake of a result that didn’t go our way.
Be it Old Trafford in 2022, Brentford at the Emirates Stadium when Ivan Toney scored a goal that never should have stood, or a penalty at Chelsea as recently as last weekend being agreed by the majority should never count as a penalty kick. Not to forget the penalty Arsenal should have got when Robert Sanchez clattered Gabriel Jesus in the same game.
I am sick of it and Arsenal might end up winning a league table of PGMOL apologies, or rather they should. But when Man City lift the title again no one is going to give a flying…
So what’s the point of it then? Well, it is actually quite simple and whilst you, I and millions of other fans are frustrated and at the end of our tether regarding the decisions that have gone against Arsenal, we need to be honest and admit that whilst yes this is happening a lot, why does it matter so much?
If Arsenal were at their free-flowing best for larger parts of a league season, if they approached every game in the right way and executed their plans, or adapted their philosophy to the game state, more effectively then it wouldn’t matter how many officiating errors there were, Mikel Arteta’s side would win anyway. And this is what needs to change.
Whilst I am sure that I will continue to moan and scream from the rooftops for greater quality of officiating, I also need to be humble enough to recognise that this high frequency of moaning spawns from Arsenal not taking the referee out of the game.
