Moises Caicedo's agent Manuel Sierra has admitted that Liverpool offered his client a 'more stable project' than Chelsea. The 21-year-old midfielder was heavily linked with a move to Anfield in the summer transfer window, but his heart was set on joining the Blues.
football.london understands that the Reds agreed a £110million deal with Brighton for Caicedo. But, the Ecuador international told Jurgen Klopp that he wanted to work under Mauricio Pochettino instead, so a switch to Anfield failed to materialise and Chelsea agreed a British-record fee with the Seagulls.
After missing out on Caicedo, and then Romeo Lavia too, Liverpool were forced to expand their search for a new defensive midfielder. Klopp eventually signed Wataru Endo from VfB Stuttgart a week or so later – but it could have been all so different had the Reds boss taken a relaxed approach to talks.
That's according to the Ecuadorian's agent, Sierra, who claims that his client was intent on joining Chelsea despite Liverpool's lucrative offer. Speaking to Futbol sin Cassette, as quoted by the Metro, Sierra said: «The issue of not going to Liverpool instead of Chelsea was also very questioned.
»The offers were similar in every way, the issue is that due to a question of values and a question of principles and of giving the floor to someone, when Liverpool’s offer arrived, Brighton were asked for time so that Chelsea could match it, they did that, they surpassed it and he ended up at Chelsea because he had given the word to Chelsea and he told them for quite some time.
«Liverpool appeared very late and with a word given to Chelsea, with everything agreed, it was said that Moises Caicedo himself was already training in a Chelsea camp [before officially signing].
