The majority of people spend New Year's Day snuggled up at home, spending time with family, or simply sleeping off the festivities from the night before. People will have less time to stock up on last-minute nibbles ahead of their New Year's Eve fireworks this year, as December 31 falls on a Sunday - meaning most supermarkets will shut at 4pm or 5pm. Many stores will remain closed on New Year's Day, though some will be operating on reduced hours as staff and shoppers alike recover from the previous night's celebrations.

Asda superstores will be open from 9am until 6pm on New Year's Day.
Aldi will open half an hour early on New Year's Eve, at 9.30amto give shoppers a heat start browsing the shelves before the tills open at 10am. All stores will be closed on New Year's Day.
Lidl will open at the slightly later time of 11am on New Year's Eve, and will be closed all day on New Year's Day.
