The sides couldn’t be separated as Drogheda United and St Patrick’s Athletic played out a scoreless, but hardly a bore, draw to leave both sides towards the foot of the table.
Almost exactly two years to the day since the last draw between the sides – eight league meetings ago – there wasn’t to be a goal to settle the match at Weavers Park. Both sides began the season just weeks ago with very different ambitions.
They have found themselves as bedfellows in the early league table, with last year’s FAI Cup winners losing four of their first six games and Drogheda enjoying an inconsistent start to their fourth straight campaign in the top-flight.
Recent encounters between the teams, with Kevin Doherty’s team winning the most recent two, had provided some standout moments. They weren’t added to here but it was hardly down to lack of effort on either sides part.
Warren Davis was Drogheda’s most potent threat, denied first by Chris Forrester’ intervention on the line and then seeing his point-blank header repelled by Danny Rogers. Early in the game, Oisin Gallagher and Adam Foley each had headers drop wide of the goal.
Whilst Pat’s threatened in behind, predominantly through Jake Mulraney and with Kian Leavy prominent, they had to wait to test the United rearguard. Jamie Lennon picked out Forrester and Andy Wogan’s leg blocked his shot.
Jon Daly’s team twice went close in the second half, with chances arriving in quick succession. Brandon Kavanagh’s shot was blocked and then Alex Nolan’s shot was hacked off the line by Evan Weir.
