Sean Dyche insists he couldn’t be prouder of his Everton players and that “people can go under” in the circumstances they have faced.
Everton have now gone 10 Premier League matches without tasting victory – their longest winless run since 1994 – with their xG (expected goals, a statistic that Dyche himself as quoted) being 13 more than the goals they have actually scored, making them the most-wasteful team in the division when it comes to converting chances. That trend continued in their last game against West Ham United when Comparisonator calculated they had 27 shots – the most in the Premier League over the weekend – only to lose 3-1 at home.
While Dyche cut a frustrated figure when first speaking to the media after the defeat, he leapt to the defence of his players when previewing their trip to Manchester United: He said: “They’ve been nice and bright today, they’re certainly putting a shift in, that’s for sure. To give you the bigger picture, I couldn’t be more proud of the players here.
“From what they’ve been through over the last few seasons. When I got here it was just constant negativity everywhere.

“They managed to somewhat change that, then when we changed it of course we get 10 points taken away, then they went: ‘Right, let’s get on with it,’ got on with it again, then we get six points taken away and four given back, still getting on with it, still working hard in training, still working hard for the badge, for the shirt and myself, the club. I couldn’t be more pleased with them.
