Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Rodri's grandmother has passed away and that the Manchester City midfielder has travelled to Madrid to be with his family.
Guardiola's side will kick off the defence of their FA Cup trophy on Sunday against Championship team Huddersfield, but the Spain international is unlikely to be involved due to the club's desire to give him any compassionate leave he requires.
Ahead of the tie, the Catalan head coach shared that recent sad news with the press, adding that family is 'the most important' thing for his players.
'His grandmum has died,' Guardiola shared on Friday afternoon. 'He is in Madrid today and tomorrow'.
The manager confirmed that the club is keen to give him additional time off, before adding: 'Hopefully he is back for the game, but family is the most important'.
Rodri may be one of a number of first-team stars that could be unavailable to welcome Darren Moore's side to the Etihad over the weekend, with Guardiola revealing that a 'fever' is ripping through his squad.
Matheus Nunes, Scott Carson, Bernardo Silva, and Kalvin Phillips are all currently recovering from an illness which has made them, in Guardiola's words as 'sick and congested'.
Such is the extent of Phillips' illness that the midfielder has not trained for five days, and Guardiola admitted that his players were 'suffering'.
