Premier League commentator Jacqui Oatley has revealed what would have been said to Simon Hooper by VAR during the review of Luis Diaz's offside goal. The Premier League clash between Tottenham and Liverpool was engulfed in VAR controversy with two red cards and a last-minute winner filling the game with drama.
The game's decisive moment arrived deep into added time when Pedro Porro's fierce cross was scuffed into his own net by Joel Matip but the main two talking points in the game happened in the first half. Just before the half hour mark, Curtis Jones was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Yves Bissouma, after a VAR intervention.
Eight minutes later, Diaz thought he had given 10-man Liverpool the lead, only for the goal to be chalked off because the forward was deemed offside. A quick VAR check took place but it has since come to light that Darren England, the official at Stockley Park, had made a terrible mistake with his understanding of the incident being that the on-pitch decision was goal given.
With minimal transparency on display to both match-going fans and viewers at home regarding VAR, Jacqui Oatley has attempted to provide some clarity on what happens when incidents are reviewed by VAR from the perspective of a commentator.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote: «Liverpool VAR: We Premier League commentators have the VAR feed in our ears so when he says “check complete” (they do this far more times than viewers realise as they check many challenges for possible *red card emoji*, it would’ve made sense here to simply add “the goal stands. „No 7 Onside”.
