The biggest storyline to come out of Tottenham Hostpur's weekend win over Liverpool FC was Luis Diaz's disallowed goal. In real time, it looked like Diaz's goal was valid and should have been given by VAR. Instead, the game continued and the goal was confirmed as offside, which was the call on the field.
The goal would have given Liverpool a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. Instead, Tottenham scored two minutes later and ended up winning 2-1 against a Liverpool side that also saw two of their players sent off with red cards. Once the match ended, fans immediately wanted the process of VAR's decision to uphold the offside call on Diaz's goal to be released to the public.
On Tuesday, the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL), the refereeing body of the Premier League, released the full audio of the VAR process. It was ultimately deemed incorrect, meaning the goal should have been awarded.
What's clear from the audio is that there was a severe miscommunication between the VAR officials and on-field referees, which led to the brutal mixup. VAR had actually quickly determined the goal was valid, saying "check complete". Unbeknownst to them, the on-field call had been offside.
Because the game had restarted, their calls to "stop the game" had no basis. A pair of expletives rung out throughout the process as the parties at fault realized their mistake.
