There is a sense of injustice around Liverpool Football Club at the moment and rightly so. Or at least semi-rightly so.
The Reds were wrongly denied a goal during the game with Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday when Luis Diaz was adjudged to have been offside before scoring past Guglielmo Vicario. Diaz was clearly onside and the mistake came when the VAR believed the on-field decision to have been goal when relaying to Simon Hooper «check complete».
It was another 45 seconds later that Hooper was made aware there had been a miscommunication and a huge error made. Nothing could be done by then, with the game already back under way under International FA Board VAR protocols and the Laws of the Game — a ludicrous rule in itself.
Many connected with Liverpool may feel a sense of injustice at two red cards being shown during the match too, although those are nowhere near as clear cut as the offside goal. In fact, in my opinion, both deserved red cards, just. Curtis Jones went over the top of the ball and was a straight red for me and while Diogo Jota's first yellow card was very harsh, he could and perhaps should have been booked for a cynical tackle minutes earlier, and his second yellow card incident was foolhardy.
Liverpool released a statement on Sunday saying: «It is unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention. That such failings have already been categorised as 'significant human error' is also unacceptable. Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.
