Rio Ferdinand has warned Ivan Toney that he could face problems at Arsenal if he lets his ego take over.
The Brentford striker, 27, is thought to be a target for the Gunners in the summer having returned to Premier League action following his ban for betting. He was heavily linked with a switch to Emirates in January and is likely to be near the top of Mikel Arteta's shopping list ahead of next season.
Toney responded jokingly this week to comments from Thomas Frank, Brentford's manager, who said it was likely they would sell their star player in the summer. Toney said: «I see that [Frank's comments] as he doesn't want me!
»The manager has said what he's said but I can't make clubs come and get me. I've just got to keep doing what I do and that's score goals. What will be will be."
Ferdinand believes people may have misunderstood Toney's comments but warned the former Newcastle United player that big egos are not tolerated by top Premier League clubs. On his Five podcast, Ferdinand said about Toney's comments: «He said it in jest!
»I don't think he would move like that [with a big ego]. I would be surprised. Remember, he has never played for a big club. He's going to go there and he will have to be respectful and know where he is in the pecking order.
