Saudi Arabia could reportedly allow fans to drink alcohol should they host the World Cup in 2034.
The Gulf state are set to make their bid to host the world-famous competition following the tournament held in neighbouring country Qatar last year.
It was announced on Wednesday that the 2030 World Cup will be played in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
As a result, Saudi Arabia are eyeing the hosting rights for the subsequent tournament four years later.
The sale and consumption of alcohol is currently banned in the Muslim country, with foreigners facing potential fines and imprisonment if caught.
However, The Sun reports that Saudi Arabia could suspend the rules in the hope of boosting their chances of hosting the World Cup.
A source told the outlet: “Football fans will be allowed to drink if Saudi Arabia stages the World Cup.
“It has not been publicly discussed but it is an accepted fact. We acknowledge very serious mistakes have been made in the past and want the world to understand that we are changing.”
Just two days before the last World Cup kicked off in November, FIFA decided to ban the sale of alcohol to fans in stadiums in Qatar.
Saudi Arabia could do the opposite should they win the hosting rights, with their bid already gaining support from Saudi Pro League stars.
Karim Benzema and Riyad Mahrez took to X amid the news and expressed their desire for the country to host the World Cup.
Al Ettifaq boss and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard offered his support on Instagram, with one of his star players Jordan Henderson backing it too.
