Sheikh Jassim 'more likely' to make Tottenham takeover decision after $8bn Man United failure
Qatari businessman Sheikh Jassim is now considered 'more likely' to make a move to buy Tottenham from chairman Daniel Levy after his failure to buy Premier League rivals Manchester United.
The 41-year-old, who is currently the chair of Qatar Islamic Bank, offered $8bn (£5bn) in cash to wipe the Glazers debt and provide new facilities for Man United in exchange for the club in its entirety but his offer was rejected outright by the American family. INEOS executive Sir Jim Ratcliffe is now set to take over footballing operations at the club after his $1.6bn (£1.3bn) bid for 25% of the club was accepted last month.
Since then, the mogul has been touted as a potential suitor to buy Spurs after Levy admitted that he'd be prepared to leave his position in the club if the price was right. He explained: «I've got no real interest to leave Tottenham, but I have a duty to consider anything that anyone may want to propose.
»It's not about me, it's about what's right for the club. We have 30,000 shareholders who own approximately 13.5 per cent. We run this club as if it is a public company. If anyone wants to make serious propositions to the board of Tottenham, we will consider it along with our advisors. And if we felt it was in the interests of the club, we would be open to anything."
Despite Levy's comments inviting buyers, including Jassim, The Athletic's David Ornstein previously claimed that Jassim wasn't likely to go back into finding a club — including Spurs — so quickly after his failure in negotiating with the Glazers.
