Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim has verbally agreed a deal in principle to become Jurgen Klopp's successor as Liverpool manager, according to reports by Sky Germany.
Liverpool — having faced competition from fellow European giants Bayern Munich — are reported to have won the race for Amorim's signature, who the club have been linked with since Klopp announced his impending departure after nine years at the end of the current campaign.
39-year-old Amorim is said to have negotiated a three-year contract to replace the German, but that a deal is yet to be finalised between the Premier League and Liga Portugal outfits.
Sources in Liverpool have denied the agreement in principle in place, but speaking prior to Sporting's recent 2-1 win over title rivals Benfica, which put them four points clear at the Liga Portugal summit, Amorim refused to confirm he would be on the Sporting sideline beyond this term.
"No, I can’t guarantee [I’ll stay]. I gave my word and I can’t go back on it. If we don’t win titles, I’ll leave Sporting. It was clear from the start, it was the bet I passed on to the players. We have to win titles.”
He guided Sporting to their first domestic title in 19 years in 2020/2021, hist first full season, and is widely considered as one of Europe's hottest managerial properties.
