Stellenbosch pushed for a 1-1 draw against an in-form Cape Town Spurs in the DStv Premiership at the Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday evening. The motive was clear for Spurs who have been in great form in the second-half of the season, but Stellies remained determined to walk away with at least a point in the Cape Derby.
The match was competitive right away as both teams attacked each other from the moment the whistle was blown. By the tenth minute Iqraam Rayners was in on goal but could not capitalise as he was in an offside position. Five minutes later, Spurs goalkeeper Neil Boshoff had to come off his line from the danger coming from a charging Anicet Oura and the team began to tighten up more at the back.
The two Cape teams were evenly matched in the first half, as both teams created chances to score. Antonio Van Wyk also had a chance at scoring but could not get the ball into the back of the net, working Boshoff once again between the sticks.
Antonio Van Rooyen came in with a powerful strike but was denied by Boshoff, who had an impressive display in the first half. The hard defensive work from the Urban Warriors finally paid off towards the end of the second half when they received a breakthrough from Asenele Velebayi, who finally opened his account for the club in the 43rd minute.
Once the second half went underway, Stellenbosch showed sheer determination to equalise matters. In the closing stages of the game, the ball hit Denwin Farmer’s hand and resulted in the referee awarding Stellies a penalty.
The spot kick was taken by Iqraam Rayners in the 70th minute and he finished confidently, getting the ball past Boshoff who was finally beaten. It was game on in the Cape Derby and the match remained intense as the team
