Emotional Steven Gerrard has issued a personal pledge in a bid to continue starring for Liverpool in the coming years.
The Anfield icon offered a weighty answer over what turning out for the legends means to him after helping secure a 4-2 win against Ajax on an emotional day. His former England boss Sven Goran Eriksson led out a Reds select to fulfil a bucket list wish of managing the club he has supported since childhood.
And the significance of the occasion – amid the battle facing the man who made him an England superstar – wasn't lost on the former Rangers boss as he made clear he's itching to be a regular returner to Liverpool for years to come but nothing is a guarantee. He said: "The opportunity to play in front of these fans again, that’s the buzz. I was on the flight, I was like a big kid coming over. Six-and-a-half-hour flight, I couldn’t wait to get here. That’s what it’s all about.
"I know I’m only going to play in front of this crowd another couple of times, maybe. That’s if I stay off the carbs and stay off the beers! I was just looking round at the end thinking to myself, ‘This is going to [happen] less and less, so just savour every moment."
Gerrard has enjoyed an upturn in Saudi Arabia with Pro League side Al-Ettifaq finding former after a ropey run as they aim to push into the top six over the final weeks of the season.
