Mamelodi Sundowns will equal the Premier Soccer League record for the most number of wins from the start of the league season if they beat Stellenbosch at Atteridgeville on Wednesday night, adding yet another milestone to their name.
Sundowns have won their opening seven games of the DStv Premiership season and will make it eight of out eight with home success over the injury-hit club from the Winelands, extending their runaway lead at the top of the standings.
The PSL record was set nine years ago when Kaizer Chiefs won eight in a row at the start of the 2014-15 season, beating Free State Stars, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Bloemfontein Celtic, Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, University of Pretoria, Maritzburg United and Ajax Cape Town before being held at home by Moroka Swallows.
Chiefs, under Stuart Baxter, went onto win the league title at the end of that campaign, which is the last trophy they won. They went unbeaten for their first 21 games of the season.
This season, Sundowns have beaten Sekhukhune United, Chiefs, Lamontville Golden Arrows, Chippa United, Richards Bay, Polokwane City and Orlando Pirates, with 14 goals and two conceded.
In 2014, Chiefs scored 12 and conceded two goals in their eight-match winning streak.
The record is only for the PSL era since 1996. The best start to a season in South African professional football came in 1991 when Chiefs won 17 in a row before being held to a draw by Bloemfontein Celtic.
