Chris Sutton has been left baffled by 'staggering' news that Tottenham's move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher 'has legs' - as he questioned the Blues' ambition to consider selling their captain to a rival.
Gallagher was linked to Spurs in the summer before making a U-turn on a possible exit and being appointed skipper by boss Mauricio Pochettino.
But despite being a key player for Chelsea, there have been reports he could leave this month.
Mail Sport's Sami Mokbel confirmed on It's All Kicking Off that a deal for Spurs to sign Chelsea's captain could happen - saying that the Blues would see his transfer as 'pure profit' as he emerged from the academy, which would allow them to spend more on incomings to get around Financial Fair Play rules.
'He is a player who - for the right price - is available in January,' Mokbel told the podcast.
'Personally I think it's madness but history tells us they look at home grown players in a different sort of way. They look at them as vehicles around Financial Fair Play regulations.
'If you sell an academy player, it represents pure profit on the balance sheet, then you can spend more money on talent.
'It's clear Chelsea needs reinforcements. The money they have spent hasn't spent well and they're looking at Gallagher and thinking "if we can get £50m or £60m while his contract is up in the air, we should consider doing it".
Sutton then interjected to express his shock that such a move was possible.
'That is remarkable that we are talking about one of Chelsea's best players moving to Tottenham in January,' he said.
