My first thought when I heard Nottingham Forest had been hit with a four-point deduction was surprise.
Then I realised that, actually, I should not really be shocked by the Premier League spending cases any more.
Once again, we have a development that is difficult to comprehend and which almost feels as though different people on different commissions are essentially pulling numbers from a hat.
This is a flawed system that just leaves more questions about the Premier League, its member clubs, and how they are running our game.

These cases are complex and the different features of each one are important. But it is tough to understand the thought process behind some of the positions taken.
In the initial hearing for Everton, the Premier League argued the starting point for the club’s sanction should be 12 points. With Forest, the league argued for an initial eight points. I can’t see where that difference comes from - the Forest breach of profit and sustainability rules was more than 70% bigger than Everton’s. Both clubs appear to have had warnings ahead of their deadlines too.
What I do know is this - supporters do not want to be spending their time trying to understand complicated financial and legal frameworks. They want to be focused on big games and highlights of their heroes, not page after page of rulings.
