Ange Postecoglou may be forced into at least four starting XI changes for the upcoming Premier League clash against Wolves. Spurs saw their unbeaten start to the league season end in chaotic fashion with a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after two players were sent off.
The first 45 minutes were played at a frantic piece with three goals disallowed, Cristian Romero sent off and a penalty awarded to the visitors. In the second half, Destiny Udogie, who was unfortunate to not be sent off in the first period was then shown a second yellow card for a reckless foul on Raheem Sterling with the two-man advantage allowing Nicolas Jackson to score a second half hat-trick, with Eric Dier seeing what would have been a late equaliser also ruled out.
Not only did the Lilywhites suffer their first defeat, but they will also now be without Romero and Udogie for this Saturday's clash with Wolves and the problems do not end there. Both James Maddison and Micky van de Ven were subbed off with injuries and Postecoglou's update at the end of the game does not bode well for the latter.
«He [Maddison] got a knock on the ankle,» Postecoglou said. «We were down one man already. It made sense to make a couple of changes at that point.» Regarding Van de Ven's injury, he added: «It's too early. With Micky it's a pretty significant one.»
For the next three games at the very least, Romero and Van de Ven are set to be absent with Dier, Emerson Royal and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg all filling in admirably against Chelsea. Ben Davies is another option but he was absent from the squad after picking up an injury against Crystal Palace with some calls for Ashley Phillips or Alfie Dorrington to be given a huge opportunity.
