A trio of Liverpool players were in action for their countries on Friday night.
The Reds contingent were all involved in victories as the international break rolled on. Among those in the headlines was Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was named in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI for the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 qualifier against Malta.
Wearing the number 10 shirt, Alexander-Arnold was one of the star performers for Southgate’s side in an otherwise routine 2-0 win at Wembley. Playing alongside former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, the right-back’s passing ability set him apart from his England teammates.

While he has often struggled to get into the side in his usual full-back role, the 25-year-old has shared his enthusiasm for playing in midfield and may have convinced Southgate that he has another option, ahead of this summer’s tournament. Asked about Alexander-Arnold’s display after the final whistle, Southgate said: “He has got outstanding quality. He and Phil [Foden] were the two in the first half that looked like opening the game up for us.”
Another Liverpool player that appeared to deliver for their country was young winger Ben Doak, who played in Scotland U21’s 2-0 win over Belgium. The teenager supplied the assist to Lyall Cameron for Scotland’s second goal, with the victory pushing the team up to second in the 2025 U21 Euros qualifying group on goal difference.
Injury has prevented Doak from being handed his first senior call-up to Steve Clarke’s squad. However, he will hope to continue
