Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has ruled out signing a centre-half in January despite links with Raphael Varane.
The Manchester United defender has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and there have been reports suggesting a return to Spain was on the cards. Varane spent more than a decade at the Bernabeu, winning the Champions League under Ancelotti in the past.
Real have suffered several notable injuries to their backline with David Alaba rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) against Villarreal last month. Despite being left short Ancelotti has poured water on any suggestion they could dip into the market this month.
The Italian said: “At the moment we are not considering signing a centre-back because we are missing two important centre-backs, but we have two others in whom we have a lot of confidence and (Aurelien) Tchouameni and Dani Carvajal can do well in an emergency. I repeat: yes. We are not going to sign (a centre-back).”
Varane was a regular in Madrid before opting to pursue a new challenge in the Premier League. The Frenchman, himself a World Cup winner, moved to Manchester in the summer of 2021 but has played in a team that have largely struggled, winning just the one piece of silverware.
Injuries and a dip in form saw his minutes limited earlier this season under Erik ten Hag. The likes of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans were both picked ahead of him which cast doubt over his future with his manager having to deny rumours of a disagreement.
"Rapha Varane? I don't know what you're talking about," he said. "It's rumours. Very important player, but there's internal competition and there should be at a top club, as we are."
