Here we take a look at Romaine Mundle's start to life at Standard Liege after rejecting a contract at Tottenham and making the move the Belgium in the summer
The summer of 2023 proved to be a key one for a number of Tottenham's homegrown stars. Bidding farewell to Harry Kane as the striker headed to the Bundesliga to link up with Bayern Munich in a big-money move, fellow academy graduates Harry Winks and Harvey White also departed for pastures new after joining Leicester City and Stevenage respectively.
The 20-year-old had starred for Tottenham in Premier League 2 in the 2022/23 season, scoring seven goals and assisting five in his 24 appearances. The player also chipped in with a further goal and assist in the club's UEFA Youth League campaign.
Involved in first-team training on a handful of occasions, a number of supporters wanted to see Mundle make the step up from the academy to the senior side going on his electric form for the under-21s. He was rewarded for his performances with Antonio Conte promoting him to the first-team squad in early March and he was subsequently named on the bench five times in the Premier League, following on from his appearance in the matchday squad for the FA Cup win over Portsmouth.
In the end, the London-born player plumped for a change and rejected a Tottenham contract extension to put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal with Belgian side Standard Liege. Clearly seeing more of a pathway to regular first-team opportunities at Standard than at Tottenham, it was a decision that left many Spurs fans frustrated as they knew the club had lost a very talented player.
