Pep Lijnders has played down concerns about Darwin Nunez’s recent goalscoring drought for Liverpool.
The Uruguayan hasn’t scored in his last 10 appearances for the Reds, with his last goal coming in the League Cup against AFC Bournemouth, while he hasn’t scored in the Premier League since the end of October. Meanwhile, his performance in recent clashes with Crystal Palace and Manchester United has seen the striker come in for criticism.
Liverpool are back in League Cup action on Wednesday night when they host West Ham United in the quarter-finals. And while Nunez isn’t certain to start, Lijnders confirmed the club’s staff have held meetings with the striker and pointed out the Reds are adapting with the Uruguayan in attack having previously predominantly played with a false nine.
“Darwin is full of desire,” he said. “You see that in each game and if we would only judge players on goals that would be so unfair because in our way always when we reach our targets and when we were really there to compete it was always about the collective.
