Chelsea are through to the Carabao Cup final after beating Middlesbrough 6-1 at Stamford Bridge, taking the tie 6-2 on aggregate. The Blues trailed coming into the second leg after being defeated at the Riverside Stadium but were able to bypass Michael Carrick's side comfortably.
For Mauricio Pochettino it relieves what had been some building pressure from fans in the fortnight following the away leg defeat. Now it means his side can look forward to a trip to Wembley as they also plan to go further into the FA Cup with the visit of Aston Villa to west London on Friday.
First-half goals from Axel Disasi, Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez came after a Boro own goal had levelled the tie early on. Chelsea continued to show their superiority after the break with substitute Noni Madueke getting in on the act, Palmer fired his second of the day too.
Morgan Rogers got one back for the visitors late on. It was a successful night for Pochettino's men though and ensured a good run at Stamford Bridge goes on.
Chelsea will now wait to find out their opponents as Liverpool travel Fulham on Wednesday. The Reds are 2-1 up and big favourites to progress to the final. That would set up a repeat of the 2022 final that ended 0-0 with Jurgen Klopp's side winning on penalties.
Liverpool and Chelsea also met in the FA Cup final that year and it had the exact same result. Chelsea are aiming to go one better now though, seeking a first domestic trophy since the 2018 FA Cup.
