Thomas Tuchel will be serving a touchline ban in Bayern Munich’s Champions League opener with Manchester United, meaning there will be a new face in the dugout.
Liverpool fan Anthony Barry will be one of the first team coaches that will help take his place against United, alongside Zsolt Low, after Tuchel was sent off during his side’s quarter-final exit to Manchester CIty last season. The scouser has been part of Bayern’s coaching setup since Tuchel’s appointment in March, having previously worked together at Chelsea.
Barry, 37, began his footballing career in Everton’s academy, though never made a first team appearance for the Blues. The former Blue Coat School pupil left Finch Farm for Coventry City in 2004, eventually making his senior debut for Accrington Stanley.
His playing career saw the scouser play for Yeovil Town at Wembley in the League One play-off final; complete a controversial and short-lived move from Chester City to Wrexham; and play alongside Jamie Vardy at Fleetwood Town. However, by his own admission, Barry discovered his true passion was coaching.

After eventually hanging up his boots at Wrexham in 2017, Barry quickly became Paul Cook’s assistant at Wigan, where he helped guide the Latics to promotion from League One. He completed his pro licence alongside future Everton boss Frank Lampard in 2020, finishing with the top marks in his cohort.
