Why Emile Smith Rowe misses out West Ham vs Arsenal as fresh injury blow revealed

Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe has picked up a knee injury, meaning he is out of Wednesday night's Carabao Cup fixture with West Ham United. The Hale End academy graduate started on Saturday as the north Londoners defeated Sheffield United 5-0.

But he wasn't fit to make the matchday squad on Wednesday with Mikel Arteta's side travelling to the London Stadium to take on the Hammers. The Gunners confirmed that Smith Rowe had picked up an injury, writing on X (formerly known as Twitter): «Emile Smith Rowe misses out on tonight's squad due to a knee issue.»

The England international has been plagued by fitness woes during the last 18 months, failing to start a single Premier League match last season. However, he was finally finding his feet again this season, providing an assist for Eddie Nketiah during the aforementioned thrashing of Sheffield United.

Arteta will hope that the 23-year-old can make a swift return to action, with the Spaniard's side currently without the likes of Jurrien Timber, Thomas Partey and Gabriel Jesus due to their respective injuries. Timber is out for the long-term, picking up an ACL injury back in August whilst Partey is suffering from a thigh injury that will keep him on the treatment table for a number of weeks, according to Arteta.

«He got that injury in training, with the last kick of the ball. Very unfortunate. He’s got another appointment today (Tuesday) and we will see more after that,» Arteta said of Partey's issue."
