Luton Town winger Andros Townsend has praised the work of Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire in Manchester United’s 1-0 Premier League win on Saturday.
He likened United to Liverpool in managing to squeeze out a result when their back is against the wall. Townsend was featuring in his fourth Luton game after signing in October following his summer release from Everton.
He played an hour at Old Trafford before being replaced. In that time, he admitted he found it difficult to break United down and outlined the movements certain players made to make it tricky for the opposition.

When asked how he found it playing against Erik ten Hag’s current United side, he told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Extremely difficult. They are difficult. We were able to defend against them well but similar to Liverpool they just find a way.
“Bruno Fernandes drifts out to the outside left position, links up with [Sergio] Reguilon, they get a few crosses that way. [Diogo] Dalot comes to midfield creating an overload and we did limit them to very few chances and defended well.
“Unfortunately, we switched off at one set piece and that was our whole game plan done. At the top level you need to stay switched on for 95 to 96 minutes because these top teams can punish you.”
Townsend added: “Honestly, it was an extremely tough game. There was rotation all over the pitch. We were well-drilled and confident as we had just got a point against Liverpool the week before, we had a game plan to press high up the pitch and force turnovers, United didn’t really give us anything.”
