Alan Shearer names 'the one thing' he likes about Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Alan Shearer has praised the relentless work ethic of Darwin Nunez while acknowledging the Liverpool forward has to improve on his finishing.

Nunez played the full 90 minutes of the Reds' FA Cup third-round win at Arsenal on Sunday evening, acting as a threat throughout the contest as Jurgen Klopp's side secured progression to the next stage of the competition.

Despite impressing with his ability to cause problems in the final third, as he so often does, Shearer has recognised the Uruguayan is quite simply spurning too many opportunities from dangerous positions. Nunez has scored once in his last 15 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, a record that does not help justify the initial £64.1million spent on the striker in June 2022.

“The one thing I do like about him if he never ever shies away, that doesn’t stop him getting in there and that has got to continue. But what also has to continue is he has to work on his finishing and his numbers have to be better because the chances that he gets, he missed far too many," said Shearer during BBC's coverage of Sunday's game at the Emirates.

“He has also got that thing that defenders hate playing against, which is great pace. He is quick, he gets himself in so many great positions and doesn’t have to be offside as many times as he is because of his electric pace. If he just waited, just be a little bit more patient for a second or so, then he would get in so many other times as well. I think there is definitely goals in there, but he has to work on that.”
