Mikel Arteta must do something he has never done before if Arsenal are to reach the Champions League quarter-finals. On Wednesday evening, the Gunners were beaten by Porto in Portugal with a delightful last-minute strike by Galeno handing Sergio Conceicao's the advantage.
Mikel Arteta's looked to have put in a superb away performance on their travels until Porto struck with seconds to spare. While Arsenal successfully nullified Porto in attack, the visitors were also guilty of being toothless in the forward areas with Diogo Costa not required to make one save.
After the game, Arteta offered his verdict on the performance of his team where he cited a lack of purpose as one of the reasons why his side drew a blank for only the third time this season in all competitions. «Obviously I am very disappointed the way we gave the game away at the end,» the Arsenal boss admitted in a press conference.
«Not managing that situation well enough. You get punished in the Champions League. If you cannot win it, you don’t lose it. We really dominated the game but we lacked purpose, especially in the first half. You need to have much more aggression, you need to break lines, to play forward and generate much more threat on that backline.»
On Arsenal's attacking struggles, he added: «They defended well. But it’s true when we got in certain areas we didn’t finish the action or put in the final ball or the right cross. Even from set pieces as well every time we touched somebody it seemed to be a foul before we even kicked the ball. But we will learn and do better.»
