Arsenal told the striker they should sign in January and it's not Victor Osimhen or Ivan Toney
Former Chelsea centre-forward Chris Sutton has urged Arsenal to try and sign Bournemouth frontman Dominic Solanke in a bid to strengthen their Premier League title hopes. The north Londoners currently sit two points behind league-leaders Liverpool at the midway point of the season.
Reigning champions Manchester City are also only three points behind Mikel Arteta's side while also having a game-in-hand on their title rivals. The Gunners endured a difficult evening on Thursday, falling to a 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham United — the first time they had tasted defeat to the Hammers at the Emirates Stadium since 2015.
It was a night that showcased Arsenal's lack of a clinical edge in front of goal, failing to score despite registering 30 shots, with the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka all spurning guilt-edge opportunities. None of those three, who are Arteta's first choices in attack, have managed to score more than five league goals this term, a far cry from last season when they all were firing at a much more prolific rate.
That has led to plenty of speculation surrounding a potential signing in attack, with Brentford frontman Ivan Toney and Napoli's Victor Osimhen both linked ahead of the January transfer window. But Sutton thinks another Premier League striker would be a better fit, in the form of Bournemouth's Solanke.
Speaking to the BBC, Sutton said: «There's been plenty of talk already about how manager Mikel Arteta needs to sign another striker in January. Brentford's Ivan Toney has been linked for a while, but he has not played for months because of his suspension. He will have been training, but how much match sharpness does he have?
