Sheffield United are to make Ben Brereton Diaz the first signing of Chris Wilder's second spell as manager, talkSPORT understands.
Former Blackburn striker Brererton Diaz is set to join on loan from Villarreal for the rest of the season.
The 24-year-old joined the Spanish club in the summer after the expiration of his contract.
He scored 47 goals in 177 games for Rovers, following his £9million move from Nottingham Forest.
Brereton Diaz netted 22 Championship goals in the 2021/22 season and that saw him linked with a move to the Premier League.
The Chile international ended up seeing out his deal with the Championship side and headed to LaLiga.
He penned a four-year deal with Villarreal, but things have not worked out there.
The forward has started just two LaLiga games, with a further 12 appearances from the bench, but is yet to score from the club.
Goals are something that Sheffield United are desperate for with Oli McBurnie and Cameron Archer their joint top scorers with three apiece.
The Blades are currently rock bottom of the Premier League with just nine points from their first 20 games.
talkSPORT also understands that Sheffield United have held talks with former Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
The Premier League winning goalkeeper with Leicester joined Nice in September 2022, before heading to Anderlecht in the summer on a one-year deal.
